The teaching method

How Strong Squares teaches chess

Strong Squares is designed to answer the question that a library of puzzles cannot: what should I study next? It offers a provisional starting point, chooses the next session and returns important ideas on a visible review schedule.

Begin with evidence, not confidence

The placement session asks the student to play moves on the board. It samples rules, tactical vision, calculation, strategy and endgame knowledge without turning chess into a notation quiz. The result is a starting recommendation, not a permanent label. Later performance continues to refine the path.

A guided session has a job

Nimzo, the academy guide, selects a compact sequence from four kinds of work: recall something due for review, study one new idea, practise it in positions, and apply it in a game or calculation. A complete beginner can follow the recommendation without building a syllabus first.

Wrong moves become material

A wrong answer is not treated as a red light followed by the solution. The trainer records the kind of miss, explains the idea in the position and schedules another encounter. The aim is to change the next decision, not merely reveal the last move.

Memory is tested after time has passed

Immediate success can be misleading. Strong Squares uses retrieval practice and delayed review, returning to material at scheduled intervals. Reliable-knowledge evidence requires later independent performance and transfer, not first-attempt completion alone.

Openings are learned as playable plans

Opening study combines ideas, move recall and sparring from the same positions. The student learns what each side is trying to achieve, rehearses the critical lines and then has to navigate plausible deviations on a real board.

Games feed the next lesson

Sparring partners are designed at distinct strengths and styles. Their displayed levels remain provisional until the planned human-game calibration study is complete. After a game, review identifies decisions that changed the position and turns recurring mistakes into future study.

How the course is made

Strong Squares maintains authored lessons and exercises with explanations and source references. Automated curriculum checks verify that required explanations, references, progression gates and learning flows remain present when the product changes. Chess logic, generated positions and release gates are also tested during every production build.

Scope and limits

No automated trainer can see everything a thoughtful human coach sees. Engine evaluations can identify stronger moves, but they do not by themselves explain a student's reasoning. Strong Squares therefore combines engine-backed play with authored instruction and explicit evidence gates. The academy is still in private preview, and payment remains disabled until its account and purchase lifecycle pass end-to-end verification.
