Discovered Check
A discovered check is the most violent of all discoveries: you move one piece and the piece behind it checks the king. Because the opponent must answer the check first, the piece you moved can grab anything it likes: even the queen: with total impunity.
How to spot it: look for your rook, bishop, or queen aimed at the enemy king but screened by one of your own pieces. Wherever that screening piece can go: capturing, forking, or threatening mate: it goes with a free tempo, because check comes first.
