Hanging Pieces
A hanging piece is an enemy piece that is undefended (or defended too few times). The simplest way to win is to take what's free: but you must confirm it's really free.
How to spot it: every move, scan the whole board for loose enemy pieces: count attackers against defenders on each. Also look for pieces that look defended but whose defender is pinned, overloaded, or about to be removed.
