The Hook Mate
The Hook Mate is a tight net woven from a rook, a knight, and a pawn around the enemy king. The knight guards the rook and one flight square, the pawn takes another, and the rook delivers the mating check: the pieces interlock like a hook.
How to spot it: look for your knight defending a rook that checks the king, with a pawn sealing the last escape. It appears in the middlegame far more often than its name suggests.
