Zwischenzug (the In-Between Move)
A zwischenzug: an "in-between move": inserts a more forcing move before the expected recapture. Instead of automatically taking back, you slip in a check or bigger threat first, then recapture on better terms.
How to spot it: before you recapture out of habit, pause and ask: "Is there a more forcing move first: a check, a threat, a bigger capture?" The in-between move often flips the result of a whole exchange.
