The practical plan
Black supports ...d5 with ...c6, challenges White's e-pawn and aims to develop the light-squared bishop before closing the position with ...e6.
Typical pawn structure
The Caro-Kann often gives Black a sound structure and a slightly restricted position. Timely breaks with ...c5 or ...e5 are how Black challenges White's space.
A common mistake to avoid
Sound does not mean passive. If Black delays the freeing break and develops without a plan, White can use the extra space to build a lasting initiative.
