Rook Endgames
Rook endgames are the most common of all: and the most drawish, if you know the technique. The essentials: the Lucena (how to win with an extra pawn) and the Philidor (how to draw a pawn down), plus the golden rule "rooks belong behind passed pawns."
How to spot it: keep your rook active at all costs: an active rook often saves a pawn-down position, while a passive one loses level ones. Cut off the enemy king and push your passer with the rook behind it.
