The Sacrifice
A sacrifice gives up material for something worth more: a mating attack, a decisive gain of tempo, a breakthrough, or a won endgame. The material is a means, not the goal.
How to spot it: when the enemy king is exposed or a defender is overworked, ask "what if I just take/give on that key square?" Calculate the forced follow-up to the end. A sound sacrifice is one you've counted: not one you've merely hoped for.
