Smothered Mate
A smothered mate is delivered by a knight when the king is hemmed in entirely by its own pieces. The classic pattern uses a queen sacrifice to force the king's own rook into the corner, then Nf7# (or the mirror).
How to spot it: when an enemy king is boxed in by its own men in the corner, look for a knight check it can't escape: and for the double check + queen sacrifice that forces the last escape square shut. One of the most beautiful patterns in chess.
