Zugzwang
Zugzwang is the cruel state where a player would be fine if they could pass: but every legal move worsens their position. It is the engine of most king-and-pawn wins and many studies.
How to spot it: look for positions where the enemy has no useful move: their pieces are tied to defence and their pawns can't move without dropping something. Triangulation: losing a tempo with your king: is the classic way to put the opponent in zugzwang.
